Public gardens are a wonderful place to visit but now and then you have the opportunity to see a beautiful private garden.
Barbara invited me out to see her hollyhocks in full glory. Beautiful shades of pink and white were indeed glorious and scattered around her acre of Eden in the East Valley. A transplanted “Alabama Rose” Barbara has transplanted herself and her favorite plants from her childhood home.
Through the years there have been vegetables, roses, citrus trees, lilies and vines. Today the garden has pockets of delight and a large expanse of lawn for grandchildren to run and play.
Barbara nurtures new plants, rooting starts, dividing bulbs, moving starts to more favorable locations. She has provided plants for plant sales, landscape projects and for fellow plant lovers.
To meet Barbara is to meet a lover of plants, of life and of the beauty of this world. I left with a start of a confederate rose and a cahaba lilly bulb. My garden and my happiness grows after a visit to Barbara’s garden.
