As gardeners something in our soul calls to us whether on our own street or halfway around world on a small street in Casablanca Morocco. We have need to plunge our hands into the soil, creating a place to grow something even in the most challenging conditions. The life in a green plant signals to us that there is a larger beautiful world we are part of. The color of the flowers brightens our own view of the world. The fruit of the plant is the reward of all the elements of nature working together. The produce provides us the food to eat, to share at our table.
What I see in this picture are the similarities in my garden and theirs. The universal brown plastic pots and repurposed containers are used to hold plants. Familiar Aloes, sansevieria, cactus, cannas, and cosmos are in flower. In the upper windows silk roses add a spot of color where it is just too difficult to keep a live plant growing. These pots lined up in front of the door require regular attention, this too represents a commitment to one’s daily routine. They must be watered, trimmed, fed, and kept clean of litter. It represents a courage and a passion, as this was the only door decorated with the pots. The gardener within believes the plants are important, they trust their fellow humans not to deface, steal or destroy this little garden.
A plant, a pot, some soil and water and we can begin a dialogue. We can find our common ground.
